The Ultimate Umbrella

Who needs the Weather Channel when they can have this umbrella for only $125?! Ambient Devices, a company in Cambridge, has invented an umbrella that senses when it's going to rain. Ambient Devises has a wireless internet device in which a receiver that is in the handle of the umbrella transmits the weather forecast through Accuweather.com. When the umbrella senses that rain is due, the handle of the umbrella will light up. This very smart umbrella has been designed to stand upright so the handle is visible when flashing.

It's been a while...

I have been so wrapped up in "condo issues", I did not take the time to realize that my one-year bloggiversary was on the 10th. So, Happy Bloggiversary to me. Soon enough, that word will be an official word in the dictionary. If "Ginormous" can make it, why can't "Bloggiversary"? I told my self that one of my New Years resolutions was to post more entries on my blog. Like most resolutions I try hard to keep, this would failed. That's why I only make them in theory, because I know I won't reach that goal. Which is fine - I'm not loosing sleep over it.

So, my condo issues are that the final stages of selling my boyfriend's condo are happening, very s-l-o-w-l-y. I understand that when you're making such a big purchase, you want everything to be perfect in the place you're going to be living in. I've done it, although the purchase for my place went much smoother than this one. It will be done, but minutes are passing by very quickly and we're coming closer to the date of the close and we're just not as far as we'd like to be for that to happen. We're trying to be patient as possible, and if we can do that, everything will fall into place.

We have also begun to attend Open Houses. Our first trek out there into the world of mostly spotless, and un-lived-in condo's that are waiting for potential buyers like ourselves, was quite interesting at first to say the least. We started in Quincy, as my boyfriend has a slight obsession with that area. I haven't spent much time in there area, so I was open to seeing what it had to offer. I had searched Boston.com's real estate section and printed out all of the listings that we might be interested in. I eventually had a stack of about 6 or 7 open houses and put them in order of time. Most,or I should say ALL of the open houses that we made a point of seeing were... let's just say that a picture isn't always worth a thousand words. Somehow, when the seller takes pictures of their place, they make it look a lot better than it actually is. We were excited to see some of the places only because they looked great in the pictures. We were disappointed, to say the least, when we saw them in person. They were either in an area that was not easy to find, and let's just say, for lack of better words, a bit sketchy. I know there are good and bad parts to every city and town, but I had obviously taken an interest to the one's who's neighborhoods were not exactly where we would want to live. Call me snobby or picky, but I'd like to feel safe when I walk around my neighborhood.

We finally gave up after becoming quite dissatisfied with what we had seen so far, so we decided to take a ride over to Marina Bay in Quincy - which if you don't know where that is, it's right on the waterfront - pretty nice actually.

The first place we happened to drive past had an open house sign on the front law - place looked nice, so we went in. An older woman happened to be walked down the hall as we were walking in and asked us if she could help us. We told her we were there to look at an open house. Her response? "This is a condo complex for people 55 and older". Our response? "OK - thank you!". We had no idea - there were no indications of that, so we laughed and left. We finally reached Marina Bay which was only about a half a mile down the road and parked in the visitor's spots. The building was beautiful and we assumed it would be out of our league. We walked in and the concierge nodded. There was a table with listings on it, so we walked up and took one. The condo ended up being pretty much what we were looking for and in our price range - we hoped it was as nice as it sounded! Even better, the open house had just started. The place was nice, nice enough to keep us interested but not quite ready to make an offer as we needed to see what else we could find in that area. We went to a few others that had potential, but we still took more of an interest to the first one we saw. I'm not quite convinced that first one could be "offer-worthy", but I'm keeping an open mind.

Oh, the joys of condo selling and buying. I just want to click my heels and have everything done!

What will they think of next?

First there was the Popularity Dialer, now there is YouMail. YouMail, if you haven't heard of this yet, is an automated voicemail system in which you can create a personal outgoing message to certain people who call you. The way it works, is you create a free account at youmail.com and your calls and then the unanswered calls are re-routed from your current service provider to youmail and then to the personalized out-going message. If you want to customize a message for your mother, the user enters the friend/relative/someone's phone number and records a greeting for that particular person. If you have an ex-boyfriend or girlfriend, or someone else you do not want to talk to, YouMail offers Ditchmail for those unwanted callers and they will be blocked from leaving a message. They have also recently created a way for current users to rank and hear the outgoing messages of other users for someone who might not otherwise know what to say.

I think I'm OK with my generic message that everyone gets... for now anyway. But then again, I suppose when I want to dish out $400 or $500 for the new iPhone, maybe then I'll upgrade to the personalized messages.

Summer, summer, summertime........

It's officially SUMMER! Well, almost a week now anyway... although summer sometimes seems to only last a few weeks, it's still a great time of the year. It's the longest day of the year, which is good because last Thursday was the weather is perfect.

What Summer means to me:

- Consistent warm weather (not 95 one day and 60 the next!)
- going to the beach or a lake
- Tanning/sunscreen
- being outdoors more
- allergies
- mosquito's
- break out the bug repellant!
- happier people
- lighter clothing/putting my sweaters away... more closet space!
- "summer hours" at work, sometimes we get out early on Friday's.
- open sunroof
- red sox games in the sun
- sandals/flip flops
- cookouts

Hangin' with the boys...

When you don't have kids of your own, taking care of someone else's children can be hard. This past weekend, Todd and I took two of my nephews into the city and they stayed with us overnight. My brother and sister-in-law were going to a wedding, which is the reason we took the kids. Usually we will baby-sit the kids at their house and when the parents come, that's when we would normally leave. We picked them up at around 2pm on Saturday, and our initial plans were to head back to my apartment, hop on the T and head to the Boston Commons to go on the Swan Boats. We knew they closed at 4 on Saturday... why so early, who knows! Since we were still on the T at 3:30, we realized it wasn't going to happen. Our plan B was to go to the Museum of Science since we had free passes. We got there at 4 and only managed to see one exhibit hall. We read on the free pass ticket that it closed at 7, but if you read the fine print, the actual Museum closes at 5, but there are certain shows that are open till 7, which were not free. That's not to say that we wouldn't have gone to see a show you had to pay for, but my nephews aren't quite old enough for them. Before we left the Museum, we obviously had to go to the Gift Shop, where I told the boys that I would buy them something. They picked up 2 cups with a spiral straw and a Shadow game and since they had found a bag of Astronaut Ice Cream and opened it, we bought that too! We were also going to go on a Duck Tour, but since it was 90 degree's, and humid, we didn't think it was such a good idea with the kids. Plus, all of the tours were sold out, so we couldn't have gone either way. Our next stop: Harvard Square. It was not 5:30 and we're back on the T - lot's of T time for the kids, but they love it! I think I also forgot to mention that my youngest nephew, he'll be 4 in August, does not like to walk around a lot. So, I had the pleasure of carrying him pretty much everywhere we went. Humid, 90 weather does not exactly mix well with a 35lb toddler. I'm not really sure of his exact weight, but by the end of the night, he felt like he weighed 100 lbs! We got to Harvard Square and went to the Garage for some hot dogs and hamburgers. After dinner, we walked around and enjoyed the street performers. Mostly solo musicians and 1 band. They were all pretty good - better than what I could do anyway! It was 8 o'clock and our last stop was right near the entrance to the T. A guy who spray paints sceneries - which was pretty cool was setting up shop. My oldest nephew (I have a niece and 3 nephews. The youngest (Ryan) and oldest (Ben) boys are brothers, which are the one's that Todd and I had) is not really afraid to do much of anything. When we had stopped to see one of the solo guitarists singing, he went right up to him and asked him how long he had been playing the Guitar for. When the spray painter was finished with his first picture, Ben wanted to go up to him and tell him he did a great job. Ben was also the first to start clapping after the man was finished. It was now 8:30 and Ryan was practically falling asleep standing up. We got on the T and headed home. Ryan was asleep shortly after we got on the T and Ben was wide awake. We got home at 9:15 (WAY past their bed time!!!) and since Ryan was already sleeping, we put Ben in bed.

I didn't sleep well, since Ryan was sleeping in an air mattress not only could I hear him move around, but I was afraid that he'd end up on the floor. I had finally fallen asleep and the next thing I knew, Ben was trying to wake me up. I looked at the clock and it was 4 am! He asked me if it was time to get up and I told him to go back to sleep! 6:30 came along pretty quickly after that and I was up for the day. We had some "TV time" for a few hours while they drank their chocolate milk. We went to IHOP and drove them home. It was a nice weekend and I always love any time I can spend with me nephews. Even though Ryan can be a devil sometimes, I still love them!

ahhh, vacation....

Not only has it been decided, but it's been booked! We are going to Aruba! We did not want to go somewhere that would be in the path of Hurricane Season by going to Jamaica in September, and Aruba is no where near the path. It took us a while to figure it out, but with the suggestions from family and friends, Aruba is the place to go! Every time I see pictures, I feel as though September is so far away. But in a way, I'm glad it seems so far because not only is it something to look forward to, but I love the summer. Summer in New England doesn't seem to last very long, so I'll take what I can get, and extend my summer by going to a warm, tropical, Caribbean island that is somewhat considered to be Fall. Either way, the skies in Aruba are always sunny, the water is always crystal clear and all shades of turquoise blue, the beverages are always frosty with the right amount of alcohol and best yet, the temperature is always in the 80's and I might add, dry!! You can't go wrong with any one of these descriptions and when you're taking as early a flight as we are, we'll make up the lost hours of sleep on the plane ride down and we'll be bright eyed bushy tailed for the white sands and warm waters that Aruba has to offer! Aruba, HERE WE COME!!

Jamaican me crazy!

I think I forgot how much time it takes to plan a trip or vacation. When you're going to a place you've never been before, it's hard to figure out which places look good as opposed to how they actually are. Pictures are not always worth a thousand words, especially if you have never been there and know nothing about. My boyfriend and I are trying to plan a vacation to Jamaica and have narrowed the resorts down to about 3. When you're spending a lot of money, you want to make sure that it's going to be well spent. Just because you're going to an island with white sand, nice clear blue water and all the drinks you want, doesn't mean that it's going to be a nice place. Although from the pictures I have seen, I'd like to go tomorrow! There are so many people who have just been to Jamaica who have written both good an bad reviews - mostly good though. I think it's going to be one of those situations where we're just going to have take our chances. I also think with the 2 places we think it'll come down to, you can't go wrong.

Anyone been to Jamaica out there? Any suggestions??
